Scope of the Venezuelan tourist visa: who needs it and how far in advance to apply

The Venezuelan tourist visa covers more people than it seems, and it leaves out people who often assume they need it. Knowing which group each traveler falls into avoids most problems.

Since April 6, 2026, it is requested online with the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry. Here we go through the most common cases and how early to start.

Who needs the Venezuelan tourist visa?

Every U.S. citizen who was not born in Venezuela and travels for tourism or to visit family.

What decides it is the passport and the place of birth. If the traveler enters with a U.S. passport and was not born in Venezuela, they need the Tourist Visa (category T), even if their family is Venezuelan and even if they are staying with their in-laws.

My spouse is American and I am Venezuelan. Does my spouse need a visa to go to Venezuela?

Yes. A U.S. spouse who was not born in Venezuela needs their own tourist visa, even when traveling with a Venezuelan spouse.

Each application is individual and in the holder's name. One spouse being Venezuelan does not cover the other, and the spouse's visa should be requested with the same lead time as the rest of the trip.

Do my U.S.-born children need a visa to go to Venezuela?

If they travel only with a U.S. passport, yes. A child born in the U.S. to Venezuelan parents who enters with a U.S. passport needs the tourist visa.

A minor's application is also in their own name. If the child also has Venezuelan documents, we review the case before applying for anything, because the path changes.

I was born in Venezuela and have a U.S. passport. Do I need a visa?

No. People born in Venezuela enter with a Venezuelan document, even if they hold U.S. citizenship.

Applying for the tourist visa with the U.S. passport goes nowhere.

The right process is the Venezuelan passport or its extension through SAIME. This is the case that takes the longest, because it depends on the Venezuelan document being current. If it has expired, that is where to start.

How far in advance should I apply for the Venezuelan visa?

We recommend starting three to four weeks before the trip.

The Foreign Ministry's official manual states the application is approved in about 72 hours. In practice it can take longer, and an application that needs a correction is deleted and filed again, so the wait starts over.

For families visiting in December, this matters more. It is the busiest travel season and fares go up. Applying early lets you buy tickets calmly instead of depending on a last-minute approval.

Which ticket should I buy before I have the visa?

One that allows date changes without penalty.

The application asks for the flight number, so the ticket is usually bought before the visa is issued. If the visa does not arrive in time, a changeable fare lets you move the trip without losing the money. Basic Economy fares usually do not allow it.

What happens if I travel to Venezuela without a visa?

You may be denied entry. Venezuela does not issue visas at the airport or at the border.

The approved visa arrives by email. Print it and present it at immigration on arrival.

How do we handle it?

We handle the tourist visa from Miami. We confirm which case each traveler falls into, prepare the application, and follow up until it is issued. If the same family has someone who needs a visa and someone who needs a Venezuelan passport, we review it all together.

Migrative is a private firm and is not affiliated with the Government of Venezuela. Approval and timing depend on the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.
