Timing and category considerations for the Venezuelan visa for U.S. citizens
Since April 6, 2026, U.S. citizens apply for their Venezuelan visa through the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry's electronic system. Both the tourist visa and the business visa go through that same system.
Choosing the right category from the start is what affects the timeline most. A submitted application cannot be corrected, and starting over costs days.
What is the difference between the tourist visa and the business visa for Venezuela?
The tourist visa (category T) is for tourism and family visits. The Business Transient visa (TR-N) is for business trips.
Both are filed through the same Foreign Ministry system, but they are different categories, each with its own application. One does not replace the other.
Which visa do I need if I travel to Venezuela for work?
If the trip is for business, the category is Business Transient (TR-N), not the tourist visa.
In general, meeting clients or partners, visiting an operation, negotiating or signing contracts are business trips. Visiting family, going on vacation or attending a personal event are tourism.
When a trip combines both, the category is defined before starting, based on the actual purpose of the trip. We review that decision case by case with each traveler.
Anyone going to work in Venezuela for a local employer needs a different visa, such as the work visa (TR-L), which has its own process.
What happens if I apply for the Venezuelan visa in the wrong category?
The application has to be done again. A submitted application cannot be edited: it is deleted and registered again.
That means filing everything again and waiting again. The days the first application had accumulated do not count toward the second.
That is why the category is decided before anything is submitted, not after seeing the answer.
How long does the Venezuelan visa take for U.S. citizens?
The Foreign Ministry's official manual states about 72 hours for the tourist visa. In practice it can take longer.
We recommend starting three to four weeks before the trip and buying a ticket that allows changes without penalty. The application asks for the flight number, and the date may need to move.
A category error or an incorrectly submitted detail extends that timeline, because it forces a fresh start.
How long is the Venezuelan visa valid?
Validity is set by the Foreign Ministry when it issues the visa. The applicant does not choose it.
Tourist visas issued so far have generally been valid for one year with multiple entries and stays of up to 90 days. There is no published rule that ensures it, so the reference is always what the issued visa says.
If you plan to travel several times in a year, check the validity and permitted entries before buying the next ticket.
Can I get the visa on arrival in Venezuela?
No. Venezuela does not issue visas at the border, in either category.
The visa is requested before traveling, arrives by email, and is presented in print at immigration.
How do we handle it?
Migrative handles tourist and business visas for Venezuela from Miami, with operations in Caracas. We define the category with the traveler before starting, prepare the application, and follow up until it is issued.
Migrative is a private firm and is not affiliated with the Government of Venezuela. Approval, validity and timing depend on the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.
