Can Americans travel to Venezuela?
Yes. A U.S. citizen can travel to Venezuela, as long as the Venezuelan visa is approved before boarding the plane.
The U.S. Government does not prohibit it. Since March 2026 the State Department has kept Venezuela at Level 3 of its travel advisory, one step below the "do not travel" level it held for years. What actually decides whether you get in is the visa, and the visa takes weeks.
Can US citizens travel to Venezuela?
Yes. The United States does not prohibit its citizens from traveling to Venezuela. What it publishes is a travel advisory with a risk level, which is a recommendation, not a ban.
The requirement comes from Venezuela: a traveler with a U.S. passport who was not born in Venezuela needs a visa. It is requested before the trip. Venezuela does not issue visas at the airport or at the border, and anyone who arrives without one may be denied entry.
What does the State Department travel advisory say about Venezuela?
In the version in force as we write this, issued June 27, 2026, the State Department travel advisory places Venezuela at Level 3, "Reconsider Travel." That update followed the June 24 earthquakes.
On March 19, 2026, the advisory had been lowered from Level 4, "Do Not Travel," to Level 3. Some areas remain at Level 4, including the strip along the border with Colombia.
The advisory cites crime, kidnapping, terrorism and limited health care. The Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy in Caracas provides emergency services to U.S. citizens only.
The level can change at any time. Check the official page before you buy the ticket.
What visa does an American need to go to Venezuela?
It depends on the purpose of the trip. For tourism or visiting family, the Tourist Visa, category T. For meetings, negotiations or visiting an operation, the Business Transient visa (TR-N). Anyone going to work for an employer in Venezuela needs the Work Transient visa (TR-L), which has its own process.
Since April 6, 2026, these visas are requested online through Cancillería Digital, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry's system. There is no consulate appointment. The approved visa arrives by email, is printed, and is presented at immigration on arrival.
We explain it in more detail in Venezuela visa for US citizens.
What documents do I need to travel to Venezuela?
For the tourist visa, the official manual asks for a passport valid for at least six months, a front-facing passport-style photo on a white background, the application form and a request letter.
The application also asks for the flight details (ticket number, date and time), the address where you will stay, and a contact in Venezuela who is not a relative, with their name, ID number, phone and email.
Previous Venezuelan visas are declared. If a visa was ever denied, the denial notice is needed.
To enter, carry your passport and the printed visa.
I was born in Venezuela and have a U.S. passport. Can I travel?
Yes, but not on a visa. For Venezuela you are still Venezuelan, and you enter with a Venezuelan passport that is valid or extended through SAIME. The tourist visa cannot be completed with a U.S. passport if you were born in Venezuela.
If your Venezuelan passport has expired or was lost, the route is the travel document known as the salvoconducto. We cover it in Venezuelan safe-conduct (salvoconducto).
How far ahead should I start?
The Foreign Ministry's manual refers to about 72 hours to approve the tourist visa. Real cases take longer, and we estimate 20 business days for the full process.
So start a month before the trip and buy a ticket that allows date changes without penalty. Basic Economy fares usually do not.
How do we handle it?
Migrative is a private firm with offices in Miami and Caracas. We are not a Venezuelan government office and we are not affiliated with the Foreign Ministry. We prepare the application, file it in the traveler's name, and our team in Caracas follows it until the visa arrives.
Approval and timing are decided by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.
