Venezuela visa for US citizens

Every U.S. citizen who was not born in Venezuela needs a visa to enter the country. Since April 6, 2026, it is requested online with the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, and the approved visa arrives by email.

The process is doable. The hard part is the detail: a photo that does not meet the standard or the wrong category sends the application back to the start.

Do US citizens need a visa for Venezuela?

Yes, if they were not born in Venezuela. What decides it is the passport you enter with and your place of birth. An American married to a Venezuelan needs their own visa, and so do U.S.-born children traveling on a U.S. passport.

Anyone born in Venezuela does not apply for a visa: they enter with a Venezuelan document, even if they hold U.S. citizenship.

Which Venezuela travel visa do I need?

The Tourist Visa (T) is for tourism and family visits. It is the one most people need.

The Business Transient visa (TR-N) is for business trips: meeting clients or partners, negotiating, signing contracts or visiting an operation.

The Work Transient visa (TR-L) is for people hired by an employer to work in Venezuela. It has its own process.

Each category is a separate application and one does not replace the other. If a trip mixes tourism and business, the category is set before starting, based on the actual purpose.

How do I get a visa for Venezuela from the US?

Everything is done online at Cancillería Digital, the official portal of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry. There is no consulate visit and you do not mail your passport.

In broad terms: a user account is created in the traveler's name, the application is registered with personal and trip details, the documents are uploaded, and the fee is paid on the same portal. The Foreign Ministry reviews the application in Caracas and, if approved, sends the visa with an electronic signature.

The application is in the holder's name. Someone else can manage it, but it belongs to the traveler. For minor children, it is registered from the father's or mother's account.

What documents are required for the tourist visa?

The official manual asks for a passport valid for at least six months, a front-facing passport-style photo on a white background, the application form and a request letter.

The application also asks for the ticket number with the flight date and time, your U.S. address and phone, where you will stay in Venezuela, and a contact there who is not a relative. It asks for your profession and current employer.

Previous Venezuelan visas are declared. If one was ever denied, the denial notice is needed.

In some cases the portal asks for an apostilled criminal background check. The apostille is handled in the U.S. and takes its own time, so it helps to know before setting the travel date.

How much is the Venezuela visa fee?

The Foreign Ministry fee for the tourist visa is 60 U.S. dollars, paid on the portal at the end of the application. That is the payment to the Venezuelan Government and it does not include the fees of whoever manages the application.

How long does the Venezuela visa take?

The official manual refers to about 72 hours. In practice it takes longer, and we estimate 20 business days for the full process, from the moment we have the documents until the visa arrives.

We recommend starting a month before the trip. The application asks for the ticket number, so the ticket is usually bought before the visa is issued: choose a fare that allows date changes without penalty.

Why are visa applications sent back or denied?

What we see most is the photo. A blurry or cropped photo, or one without a white background, keeps the application from moving.

Next is the passport: with less than six months of validity, the application does not qualify. The country of birth must also match the passport nationality; if you were born in Venezuela, this is not your process.

A submitted application cannot be edited. If a detail was wrong, or the category was not the right one, it is deleted and registered again, and the wait starts over.

The final decision belongs to the Foreign Ministry. If the visa is denied, a reconsideration can be requested.

How do we handle it?

Migrative is a private firm with offices in Miami and Caracas, not affiliated with the Government of Venezuela or its Foreign Ministry. We confirm your category, fill out the form and the letter, file the application, and our team in Caracas follows it.

We cannot promise approval or timing. What we do is file a complete application on the first attempt.
